Girl Scouts are in cookie-selling mode

- BY ALEX GUERRERO STAFF WRITER

It may not be the most magical time of the year, but it's getting close.

That's because Girl Scout cookies are back until March, and Theres Huebner - a troop leader for unit 209 - wants you to know her team is ready to help anyone longing for a Thin Mint or Tagalong.

She also wants to be clear the goal isn't to sell the most.

"We just want to let the community know that we're selling the cookies now," Theresa Huebner, the troop leader for unit 209, said.

It's something Huebner and her troop has been doing for 10 1/2 years, and six of her girls have been with her for 10 years. Watching them grow, and seeing

them persevere through the challenges of selling, has made Huebner proud.

"They're more mature and they represent themselves a lot better as young women coming into the community now," she added.

Typically Huebner and her troop will go door-to-door, an activity that Huebner believes will help teach her girls to represent themselves better and teaches them that failure, no matter how small, is an inevitable part of life.

"In your life you're not always going to get what you want," Huebner noted.

Life also becomes harder as you grow and assume more responsibility, which is what Huebner wants the girls to learn.

"When they get older it's more hard and difficult to sell the cookies because they are becoming young women now, and a lot of people affiliate cookies with younger girls," Huebner said.

Dealing with a pandemic has also complicated things.

Typically, Huebner collects orders in January, in February her troop will deliver the cookies, and in March there will be cookie booths in different parts of the community. But because of the pandemic, they won't be doing those booths, so she expects sales to fall significantly.

Their goal this year is to sell 3,000 boxes in order for all 10 troop members to be able to afford to take a trip outside the area and sleep in tree houses.

For anyone interested in buying cookies, they can text their orders to 419-303-7133 or email Huebner at theresarosehuebner@ gmail.com.
