Buckland officials start planning for sesquicennial
Buckland community members gathered Tuesday night to start planning for a sesquicentennial celebration.
Committee member Joyce Pugh asked the village’s top official what he’d want to
emphasize — the history, the history of a certain era 150 years ago, or focus on
entertainment activities?
“I would say all of the above,” Mayor Tim Detty said. “Anything we can do to draw people here. It’s Buckland’s 150 birthday basically; It needs to be celebrated.”
The group came to a consensus that they wanted the celebration to happen during the
summer months and spread it out because they didn’t have a specific date in mind.
Buckland Fire Chief Aaron Vorhees and Sheriff Mike Vorhees were present to represent the fire department, which annual plans its festival during the early summer. Next year marks the 50th anniversary for the
Buckland Fireman’s Jamboree and there is the potential to collaborate to celebrate the sesquicentennial during their 50th anniversary event.
Mike Vorhees recalled the being the chair for village’s 125th celebration.
“We tried to go to organizations like the rec club, the church, Boy Scouts, anybody that would want to put something on” participate, he said, noting the church put on a craft
show, while the recreation club held a little league tournament.
Other ideas Vorhees discussed were vintage baseball, belt sander races, and porch concerts.
Allison Brady told board members that they would want to start schedule vintage baseball or bands for a parade now, as they get booked quickly.
Pugh discussed a cemetery tour, while historian and metal detecting hobbyist Glen Farley wanted to display the artifacts he has found in the Buckland area.
Buckland Fiscal officer Cindy Sidey wanted to use the administration building, whether
it was to show a movie on or the history related to the old tile mill that used to be there.
The committee will also look at Cridersville’s Sesquicentennial Plus One event for
ideas, including opportunities for a dedication or ceremony.
While specific dates haven’t been set, plenty of ideas were generated.
The next meeting has been scheduled for
Aug. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Buckland Administration building.
“We are going to need to raise funds,” Detty
told the group. While they may be able to get some money from the village, they are seeking sponsors for most of the cost once details become clearer.
