Car show will benefit young cancer victim

An area car show benefit this weekend at Lake Amanda could become annual tradition.

A few months ago Maverick Haselton, 8, of Lima learned he had Burkitt’s Lymphoma, a form of cancer, and to assist Maverick, family and friends are putting on a car show at Lake Amanda.

“We are kind of a loose-knit car club. We hang out work on each other’s cars a lot — go to car shows together,” organizer Matt Hollinger said. “Let’s do

something that we like to do that we know how to do, let’s have fun and at the same time help somebody out.”

Hollinger said Haselton has been receiving treatment at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

“They were really aggressive with the treatment,” Hollinger said.

Haselton recently had his treatment port removed.

“He is starting to get a little fuzz back on his head; we are

just trying to give him a little bit of his summer back,” Hollinger said.

About 300 people expressed interest in a car show online, and organizers passed out about 2,400 fliers. Registration opens at noon Saturday and the show begins at 1 p.m.

“Other local car clubs are coming to help out,” Hollinger said. “If the weather’s nice we are hoping to have a lot of cars there.”

They will have bounce houses present and a DJ as well. The half pint tank from the Lima Tank plant will be there to shoot out t-shirts.

The other draw is the prizes. “It’s all custom, handmade trophies. These are all welded up and professionally painted,” Hollinger said. “We really tried to go all out.”

Hollinger is bringing a 1973 Dodge Challenger and a 1964 Chrysler Imperial, although all makes and models are welcome.

Maverick’s father Eric will bring a 1989 S15 truck that is body-dropped.

“It doesn’t run, but we are going to trailer it there,” Hollinger said.

“Nobody had seen this coming especially with a little 8-year-old kid,” Hollinger said.

“We want to do this next year and find another family that needs help or an organization,” Hollinger said.
