Redskin softball wins WBL Title
The Wapakoneta Redskins clinched
their fifth outright Western Buckeye League Championship with Wednesday’s 16-0 home win
over Defiance. The Redskins scored early
and often as they get the shutout win over the Bulldogs in the
shortened run-ruled game.
With the win, Wapakoneta picks up their first WBL title since 2017. The Redskins
have now eight total WBL championships. The Redskins remain perfect in WBL play as
one more game is set and the end of the regular season looms. Following the game Wapakoneta manager
Bill Sammons spoke about his team’s accomplishment, “the girls put an exclamation point on the season and that’s the first step in our season, the girls didn’t want to
share, I told them ‘there is only one time to be selfish and that’s the league title,’ the girls played loose and focused after a great practice yesterday, we keep getting better,” said Sammons.
Sammons continued talking about his team’s progress, “this team is a totally different team than our first
scrimmage, I’m so proud of them because they keep getting better, we are beat
up but the girls continue to work hard
and we have ‘Grit’ on the back of shirts for a reason, the girls have grit this year.”
Wapakoneta put up another big offensive
showing in Wednesday’s win, the Redskins combined for 15 hits as a team. Allie Wilson led the team going 4/4 at the plate,
hitting a double, and driving in one run. Aryka Watt and Emily
Vanhorn each had
three hits, Addison Fisher and Carlie
Schroeder each had two hits, and each hit a double. “The girls
just smoked the ball, it was awesome tonight,” said Sammons.
Four Wapakoneta players finished with multiple RBI, Schroeder and Addy Allen each had two, Vanhorn had three and Fisher led the team with four. Only one Wapakoneta batter
went down on strikes. The Redskins have
now had nine doubledigit games in the scoring column.
The Redskins also pick up their eighth
shutout of the season as Addison Fisher pitched the full fiveinning game, she allowed two hits and walked one while
striking out four in the win.
For Defiance, Taighen Zipfel got the start for the Bulldogs, she would allow 10 runs
on 11 hits. E Rosa would pitch the final of the four innings,
she would allow six runs on four hits and walk. The Bulldog defense also had two errors only making the
night worse for Defiance.
The Bulldogs now
fall to 10-9 overall and 5-3 in WBL matches.
Wapakoneta improves to 8-0 in WBL play and will look to win a ninth WBL game as they host Bath today. Wapakoneta is now 13-4 overall and will look to
start postseason play Wednesday as they are set to host Toledo Start.
Sammons spoke about what he hopes to see from his team as they enter postseason play, “I think we have to stay humble and that’s my job, I think the girls are going to stay humble and hungry, we always talk about being loose, focused and taking every game
pitch by pitch and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”
