100 YEARS AGO, MAY 10, 1922

Wapakoneta butchers got together at the Werner Market on East Auglaize Street and discussed the Sunday closing propositio­n for the

summer months. It was agreed that butchers, like “other folk,” should have Sundays “off,” so a law was “passed” that all shops will remain closed. An agreement was entered that the first

meat dealer “caught” selling on Sunday will forfeit $25, which will be used to provide a feed for the remainder of the butchers.

75 YEARS AGO, MAY 10, 1947

Last week 3-A displayed their written work on the hall bulletin board. Pupils whose papers were chosen were: Marjorie Brown,

Shirley Elsass, Sally Brading, Georgina Koch, Charlene Bowsher, Stan Hoegner, Connie Hengstler, Arthur Klipfel, Joe Brodie, Wyman Haskins, John Hardacre, Larry Kantner, and

Bobby Crow.

The Birds I Have Seen This Year—this spring I saw a lot of birds, like robin, red wing black bird, read headed woodpecker and a cardinal. The robin was building a nest. It was

building it on Pearl Street and it had a little done…..leroy Wilbur Knerr.

On Saturday I got up and went fishing. First I got my pole and it was sort of dark, but I went down to the river anyway. I stayed there all day. When it was about 3:00 I had seven catfish. I was getting tied, so I went home and cleaned the fish. Then I had fish for supper…. Edgar Bobb

50 YEARS AGO, MAY 10, 1972

Lawrence Curtis, principal at Blume Junior High School, was named as administra­tive assistant to the superinten­dent of Wapakoneta City Schools at Monday evening’s board meeting. He has been principal at Blume for the past 13 years. Also hired at the meeting was John

Nemec, who will be the head football coach at Wapakoneta High School and a teacher n the

English Department. A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Nemec served two years as graduate assistant in football at Toledo University, and has

just completed two years as assistant freshman coach at West Point Military Academy. A contact was also issued to Marty Santillo, to teach

business education at Blume and also as first assistant in football. Contracts were issued to returning teachers: Mrs. Miriam Lynch and Mr. Keaton Vandemark. Renewal contracts were issued to Mrs. Edith Stroh and Mrs. Barbara Copeland, cafeteria employees, and Steve Woods was employed as custodian at Northridge Elementary School.

After President Nixon’s unschedule­d talk Monday night on TV, what Vice President Agnew has to say in Columbus tonight will

have importance going far beyond the confines of Ohio. It could have internatio­nal significan­ce. Those from here who plan to attend are: MM Fred Wintzer, MM Mark Bowsher, MM Godon Cummings, MM John Connaughto­n, MM Ferald Ritchie, MM Charles Brading, MM Tom Cornell, Bob Kuck, and Merle Harrod.

Superior Tube Company paid special honor to its long service employees Saturday at the company’s annual service recognitio­n dinner

held at the Knights of Columbus Hall. In attendance were employees with 10 years of service

or more. Welcomed into hat select group were four employees who completed their 10 years during the past year: Joann Schmaltz, Marjean Niemeyer, Ruth Biederman, and Robert

Schindler. Music by Jerry Fritz and Ralph Bowersock was provided during the dinner hour. The welcoming committee consisted of Marjorie Byrne, Helen Edman, Leonard Ruwoldt, and Herman Hageman.

25 YEARS AGO, MAY 10, 1997

Former Wapakoneta businessma­n M. Merle Harrod, Petoskey, Michigan, died May 8. He was 90. Mr. Harrod was the president, chief

executive officer, and director of the Wapakoneta Machine Company from 1953 to 1977. He was a member of the board of trustees for Ohio

State University om 1969 to 1978. He was a director of the National Associatio­n of Manufactur­ers, chairman of the Ohio Manufactur­ers’ Associatio­n, director of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, and chairman of the Ohio Internatio­nal Trade Center.
