Redskin softball wins on Senior Night

- By AJ STREETER SPORTS Editor

The Wapakoneta Redskins completed

their perfect season in Western Buckeye League play after

beating Bath in a tight 8-6 match. Bath was able to cling to a lead for the first two innings, but the Redskins took advantage of a big third inning at the plate and never looked back.

The Wildcats were able to score on the Redskins early, taking

a 5-2 lead going into the third inning. Wapakoneta would

hold Bath scoreless in four of the five remaining innings. The

big third inning for the Redskins was

kicked off after senior Addy Allen hit a single and was swiftly

crossing the plate following a two-run

home run in the next at-bat from Carlie

Schroeder. Wapakoneta would score two more runs in the third off of doubles from Emily Vanhorn and Amber Schnippel.

As a team, the Redskins finished the night with 14 hits. Se

nior Aryka Watt led the team with three along with Emily Vanhorn. Addison Fisher and Carlie Schroeder each had two hits, and each also hit a double.

A Schnarre was the fifth Redskin batter to hit a double on the night.

Rylie Jeanneret got the start for the Redskins, she would pitch 5 1/3 innings. Jeanneret would finish the game with the win but allowed three

earned runs and six total runs on eight hits

and two walks. Along with the win, Jeanneret sat down 10 Wildcat batters on strikes.

Addison Fisher would take over in the

sixth for Jeanneret and pick up the save,

she only allowed one walk and struck out

two, while also getting out of a tough jam with the bases loaded

in the sixth and getting much needed out to not allow Bath to score.

Each team finished with one error as both teams were able to get the bat on the ball throughout.

Five seniors took part in the Senior Night festivities, Katie Lisi was one, she may

have not been able to play her senior season after a torn ACL earlier in the school year but she has been at every game supporting the team, before the game she was able to

step up to the plate one final time in a Redskin uniform and get a hit. The four other seniors were Addy Allen, Shaylin Cook, Aryka Watt and Allie

Wilson. Wilson and Allen would each have

a hit along with Watt’s three.

Following the game, Wapakoneta Manager

Bill Sammons spoke about his seniors, “we

have a lot of great leaders with our seniors, every one of of our seniors contributed to our win and to our season. They are the backbone to our team and we follow their lead and they’re leading the right way, I really appreciate them,” said Sammons.

The Redskins finish the regular season 14-4 and 9-0 in WBL games, they now will

start postseason play Wednesday at home as they host Toledo

Start. Sammons spoke about that challenge following the game, “the first two innings

are key, we have to hit, when we’re on defense first sometimes we

struggle, but we need to get out right away

and not the pedal down because this team we’re playing Wednesday scores a

lot of runs. We have to

score runs against this team because they’re going to hit against

our pitchers, we have to find a way to continue to do what we do.”
