River canoeing offered

-

The Auglaize County Historical Society, in partnership with Heritage Trails Park District, will provide local residents the

opportunity to canoe the Auglaize River on the upcoming Thursdays of May 19, May 26,

and June 2. The event is held in conjunction with the Historical Society's heritage tourism initiative IN MOTION, which highlights the

many transportation-related sites and themes in Auglaize County. IN MOTION is funded, in part, by the Ohio Humanities Council.

Traveling by water is among the earliest means of moving through what would become Auglaize County. Participants will hear a brief

presentation about our county's water transportation history followed by a 5-mile canoe trip on the Auglaize River.

Three program dates are available: all begin at 5:15 p.m.:

Thursday May 19, Thursday May 26, and Thursday June 2; rain dates will be announced, if needed.

Canoe trips will be conducted through the Fort Amanda Canoe Livery, located at 22638

Dughill Road, Lima. Actual time on the river is approximately 1.5 hours. Canoes, paddles, and life jackets will be provided. This program is

free, but space is limited and pre-registration is REQUIRED. Those interested may register for

one of the program dates by phoning Heritage Trails Park District at 781-816-PARK.

Since 1972 the Ohio Humanities Council, state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, has provided, leadership, resources, and financial support for the humanities in Ohio. Humanities programs take various forms,

such as book discussion, public lectures, historical portrayals, touring exhibits, radio series, and forums. The Council produces and supports programs in every region of the state.
