Redskins win sectional title

- By AJ STREETER SPORTS Editor

The Redskins get a 13-0 win over the Spartans of Toledo Start. The Spartans knocked Wapakoneta last year in the sectional final in an 11-8 game, this year the Redskins get revenge and capture a sectional title.

Wapakoneta’s win was greatly bolstered

by a huge Redskin fourth inning as they

had 10 scores come across the plate. The Redskins were able to

end the game after the top of the fifth.

The Redskins put on an offensive showcase

in Wednesday’s win, as a team, they had 15

hits in the 13-run performance. Five Redskin batters had multiple hits, led by both Emily Vanhorn and Addy Allen with three. Addison Fisher, Rylie Jeanneret and Aubryn

Schnarre all had two. Jeanneret and Fisher

each also hit a double and Vanhorn had a triple. Fisher and Carlie Schroeder led

the Lady Redskins with two RBI each.

Start had Miranda Bee begin the game on the Mound but was replaced in the fourth

after allowing six, she would end the game with eight runs

against her as a few Redskin baserunners

scored after Maddie Collins came in for relive. Collins would allow five runs on five hits. The two would combine for four strikeouts in the loss.

Addison Fisher pitched the entire five innings for Wapakoneta, she only allowed four hits and sat down five Spartans on

strikes. Redskin manager Bill Sammons

spoke about Fisher’s play after the game, “Addison Fisher pitched lights out,

she’s a freshman and understands how to

handle pressure, hats off to her and all the girls that contributed.”

The Redskins have a lot of people to give credit to in their great

season so far, they are now 15-4 overall, went undefeated in WBL play and now have a

sectional title win under their belt. Sammons gives a lot of that credit to his assistants, both Dan Fisher and Scott Wilson have

been important for the Redskins along with Katie Lisi, a senior who has not been able to play this season

due to injury, all are key to helping the players on the field for Wapakoneta.

The Redskins will now travel to Bowling Green Tuesday to take

on top-seed Anthony Wayne. Sammons

spoke about the challenge of facing the Generals, “we’re going to treat that as our

state championship game, we want to play

the best, that’s what we always tell the girls,

I love that we are in Anthony Wayne’s bracket, we want to

see what we can do against this team and

supposedly the best team in the whole

state.” He added, “this team’s going to come

out fighting, we’ll do whatever it takes to be able to win and we’ll see what happens.”

The Generals were able to beat the 17-seeded Toledo

Notre Dame Academy Eagles, in a 20-0 match on Wednesday.

The Redskin seniors have now played their last game at Wapakoneta, Allie Wilson, Aryka Watt, Shaylin

Cook, Addy Allen and Katie Lisi will now hope to keep their senior seasons going.

Sammons spoke about his senior’s winning a

sectional title, “that was huge, especially

DI, getting a sectional championship for these seniors kind of puts an exclamation point on the season

stating ‘this isn’t a fluke’ going 9-0 in the league, then getting a sectional championship against a great Toledo Start team, now

everything is icing on the cake, we don’t

have any pressure on ourselves, we’ll play,

have fun, but not take it too lightly and go hard and see what happens.”
