JANUARY 24, 1923

■ Fred Schaub has purchased the remaining stable on the Elks Home site property at the rear of the Hotel Steinberg. The older barn or portion of the old Nagel livery stable was sold to Florian Smith.

■ Duties of Service Director Hoard Benner, who, with Mrs. Benner, left for a sixty day stay in California to visit relatives, will be performed during his absence by Mayor Fred Klipfel and clerk of the service department Gilbert Kiefer.

■ MM Howard Yocum were in Toledo this week where they attended the General Electric Merchandis­e Show.

■ MM Ora King, Wapakoneta Route 2, are parents of a son born in their home on January 22.

JANUARY 24, 1973

■ Mrs. Betty Locker, 310 E. Benton Street, was indicted January 18 by the Grand Jury on charges of embezzleme­nt of funds in connection with the theft of $2071.98 at the City Building. Taken into custody by Auglaize County sheriff’s deputies, Mrs. Locker appeared in Auglaize County Common Pleas Court represente­d by her attorney Kenneth Hitchens. There was no plea entered. Mrs. Locker was released on her own recognizan­ce to await arraignmen­t. Safety-service Director Harry Miller said Mrs. Locker “resigned voluntaril­y” from her job on December 20. Miller stressed that the resignatio­n was not officially accepted until Mrs. Locker was delivered a letter informing her of the decision.

■ Harold Drummond, a member of the US Army stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, suffered a serious gunshot wound when his weapon jammed and exploded when he attempted to fire it. Drummond, whose gun contained blank ammunition, was practicing for a military funeral at Greenlawn Cemetery when the explosion occurred. He was listed in satisfacto­ry condition at Joint Township Memorial Hospital.

■ The People Speak-what is your opinion of the St. Joseph Knights’ winning streak and the remainder of their season? Daniel Havens, 301 W. Plum street, replies: “[The team] is much better than last year. As for the remainder of the season, I think they will go undefeated, and if they stick together there are strong possibilit­ies they will end up in the state tournament.”

■ Anna Mauk, daughter of Clinton and Lillian Mauk, Wapakoneta, is a member of Little Ones to Him Belong, a student-directed puppet team at Bluffton College. She is also a member of the Social Work Cub. Mauk is a 1997 graduate of Wapakoneta High School.
