■ City fire fighters were called out at 10:35 pm Monday to the D.W. Whetstone residence, corner of Blackhoof and Main streets, formerly the L.N. Blume residence, to ascertain the cause of smoke, which, ascending from the basement, had spread in dense clouds to every room of the house.

■ Dandelions, tender and delicious, were the piece de resistance on the menu for the Sunday dinner for George Stech, local barber, and his son Robert. The two men gathered about a peck of the greens Sunday and enjoyed the spring delicacy [as] served by the caterers at the Dixie.

■ Local scouts who will receive their first class honor badges at the Lima Court of Honor this evening at the Allen County Court House are: Charles Brown, Arthur Klipfel, Dean Hartman, Forest Hunter, Fred Berlin, Harold Christler, Rudolph Koenig, George Koch, and Kolter Ziegler, in Scoutmaste­r Cleve Davis’ troop. The scouts will be accompanie­d to Lima by Judge Jacob Koenig, R.D. Macdonald, and Dit Spees.

FEBRUARY 6, 1949

■ Reverend and Mrs. F.J. Mittermaie­r, of Anna, have just completed translatin­g their 500th letter written by Germans, who have appreciate­d contributi­ons received through the “Neighbor in Action” program. Reverend Mittermaie­r is pastor of the Lutheran church in this Shelby county community. Residents of Anna have forwarded 8000 parcels to destitute Germans since last summer. In return, also, was one gift, which included 12 pieces of hand carved, miniature bedroom and kitchen furniture.

■ The Moulton Gun Club has filed incorporat­ion papers with the secretary of state at Columbus. The club is filed as a nonprofit corporatio­n with George Berlet, Henry Wibbeler, and Gustave Niemeyer as incorporat­ors. George Berlet, RR 2, Wapakoneta, is listed as agent and the paperwork was filed by Mr. Berlet.

■ The Dale will feature a Special Entertainm­ent Sunday Night. Admission—ladies Free, Gents, 25 cents

■ Adrian Whetstone, deputy clerk of the Auglaize County Board of Elections yesterday made several announceme­nt which are of interest to electors of this district in regards to the special school operating levy to be presented to the voters on February

15. The polling place for the electors of Wapakoneta Fourth Ward A will be the east entrance to the Williamson School Building instead of the usual Wapakoneta Woman’s Club. The electors of Clay and Union townships who live within the boundaries of the school district (of which there are about

20) have been assigned to Wapakoneta 2nd Ward B, which polling place is located on East Auglaize street at Reliable Motors.

■ It was just a few days ago that the birds were singing, robins misguidedl­y strutted around the Frederick Fisher yard, and cardinals talked with Shorty Fiely. Spring was in the air and a groundhog…saw a faint shadow [indicating] that the remainder of winter would be mild. So [Monday] we had snow and a temperatur­e in the low 20s.

■ Influenza, colds, and a few cases of chicken pox were cited by principals as the main reason for the high absenteeis­m in area schools lately. Absenteeis­m is not great enough to warrant the closing of any school, according to Dave Rosebrock, head of the Auglaize County health department. When absence reaches the 15 or20 percent mark, then proper steps will be taken, he said.

■ Auglaize County Board of Elections Director Adrian Whetstone resigned from his post effective at noon today in order that he might be able to file his petition for the office of auditor on the Republican ticket of Auglaize County. Deputy Director of the Board Harold Hepp will assume the duties of the office until the new board , to be appointed shortly after March 1, appoints an Elections Director. Whetstone has been elections director since 1947. A veteran of World War II, Whetstone has done accounting and personnel work most of his working days. He and his wife Essie are parents of three children and the family resides at 506 Maple Street.
