■ Not very many people knew there was a bell in the belfry of the City Building. No doubt some of our older people remember hearing it rung, but it certainly hasn’t been during the last quarter century. We could wish the city had a new and beautiful city building to grace the square shared by the courthouse and churches, but there are other things we need more, no doubt.—c.k. Rockwell, publisher

„ ■ Workmen discovered a number of monkey-faced owls while demolishin­g the City Hall tower. At least our monkey-faced owls were in the tower and not in the offices below. Can any other city make that statement?

„ ■ Speaking of this tower, no small part of the downtown population can now return to their normal occupation­s now that the structure has been demolished. And no doubt those volunteer overseers went home to tell their wives what a tough day they had at the office or store!—c.k. Rockwell

„ ■ The Diesel-wemmer-gilbert Corporatio­n’s cigar plant in St. Marys will close May 21, Detroit officials of the company have revealed. The plant now has 160 on its payroll, including 27 men and 133 women, The plant, which specialize­s in making R.G.

Dunn cigars, has operated in St. Marys since 1912. Other plants are located at Findley, Lima, Delphos, with company headquarte­rs in Delphos. The company will offer employment opportunit­ies to St. Marys works in any of the firm’s locations, but especially the Lima plant. The Lima plant is the parent plant of the company, which was incorporat­ed in 1928. Factories in Wapakoneta and Minster were closed about 15 years ago.

„ ■ ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS— Last Monday the elementary teachers gave a farewell party to Williamson school. Mock closing day exercises were held, etc. At this time there was read an original poem composed by Mrs. Carolyn Kah, teacher of 1-A. The poem commemorat­ed the 75 years of service rendered by the present building. It is entitled “Williamson to Centennial.”

The memories that we cherish,

From the school we hold dear,

Just take along to Centennial,

And continue for many a year.

The things that caused us anguish,

The trials, the uncertaint­ies, we impart, To leave in the abandoned building, So Centennial gets the proper start. Let’s go forth with new determinat­ion; And carry on daily in school life

The idea that guidance and knowledge Help our children through all strife. Keep one thing in mind along the way: The new building is only the frame; Good teaching is the important factor To carry on Centennial’s name.

April 30 will mark the 50th wedding anniversar­y of MM William Stoll, 605 W. Benton street. Mrs. William Stoll, before her marriage, was Mary Diegel. MM Stoll moved to Wapakoneta from Shinbone 24 years ago. They are the parents of Mrs. Leslie Phillips and Mrs. Wilbur Jauert. Mr. Stoll’s physical condition will not permit a festive celebratio­n. Stoll, 82, is a retired bricklayer and brick mason, while his wife is 72.
