Lady Trojans Fall in Tournament Opener

BOTKINS- The (#8) Botkins Trojans Softball team was unable to get any runs on the board Friday night and fell to the (#10) Newton Indians 11-0 in a Division Four Region 16 Southwest Two Sectional Final game.

Newton was the first to get on the board in the second when Vivien Clark singled, scoring one run. The Indians added to their early lead in the top of the third inning when Layla Van Culin homered to left field, scoring two runs, Audrey Miller doubled, scoring one run, and Clark singled, scoring one run. They tacked on five more runs on five hits in the top of the sixth inning. Van Culin singled, scoring two runs, Mya Denlinger singled, scoring one run, and Miller singled, scoring two runs.

Madison Loy started in the circle for Botkins. The righthande­d pitcher went six innings, giving up 11 runs (nine earned) on 14 hits, striking out three and walking four. Kambree Walters led the Trojans with two hits in two at bats. The infield turned one double play on Friday.

Van Culin earned the win for Newton. The right-handed pitcher allowed four hits and zero runs over six innings, striking out 14 and walking two. The Indians piled up 14 hits in the game. Van Culin led with four runs batted in. The cleanup hitter went two-for-three on the day. Miller went four-for-four at the plate to lead in hits. Clark and Denlinger each collected multiple hits for Newton.

Following the loss, Botkins dropped to 11-9 on the season and will host the Anna Rockets on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Newton improved to 10-13 after the win and will travel to Tri-village to take on the Patriots at 5:00pm.
