Shiloh Saints Pull Away In Fourth Quarter
FARMINGTON — Cardinal shooting cooled off down the stretch and Shiloh Christian pulled away from a 45-40 game in the last 2:50 to defeat Farmington, 52-40, on Friday.
Beau Thompson, Farmington boys basketball coach, said defensive rebounding and turnovers cost Farmington the game.
“Shiloh is a good team and we have to make so many concessions to guard their best player that it puts you out of position for rebounding,” Thompson said.
Beau Thompson was referring to Shiloh’s Darian Harris, a 6-foot-6-inch guard, whom the Cardinals limited to eight points, all from the foul- line. But the Saints’ Taylor Thompson’s 6-foot-5 size gave Farmington trouble all night and he and Ryder Anderson capitalized on the offensive glass, scoring 18 and 15 points respectively to lead the Saints.
The Cardinal squad gave the Saints all they could handle in the earlier stages of the game, taking a 6- 4 advantage on Chase Garner’s putback of a missed 3-pointer. At the 4:09 mark of the firstquarter, Josh Muller came off a screen to hit for three and a 9-7 Cardinal lead.
Shiloh then ran off 13 consecutive points before Alex Dellett’s jump- hook broke the run and began a 10-4 Cardinal spurt to keep Farmington close, 23-19, at halftime.
Twice Jared Martin hit 3-point shots on looks from Matt Brackett as Farmington kept it close in the third frame. With just more than 4:30 to go in the quarter, Martin stole the ball and weaved his way through traffic to score a layin and convert a three-point play, making the score 31-28 in favor of Shiloh.
Martin and Brackett connected on trifectas with a two-point bucket by Shiloh’s Taylor Thompson in between. Taylor Thompson hit a pair of foul shots that were answered by Dellett with two free throws. Then, Harris sank two more charity shots and Shiloh led 39-36 after three stanzas.
“They got two or three possessions early in the fourth quarter where they shot two or three times in the possession and scored,” coach Thompson said.
Coach Thompson noted the Cardinals missed a couple of chip shots during the stretch when Shiloh extended their lead.
“When you miss a couple of shots like that in a close game, it’s five or six points,” coach Thompson said.
Martin had a quartet of three-point plays, including a trio of trifectas, to lead Farmington with 14 points. Dellett added eight; Muller, five; Chase Garner, four; Jackson Stevens, four; Brackett, three; and Jimmy Hollingsworth, two.
