Five Wednesdays In February This Year

- Lincoln Lifestyles MARIE ROY Enterprise-leader Columnist MARIE ROY IS A LIFELONG RESIDENT OF LINCOLN AND HAS WRITTEN FOR THE ENTERPRISELEADER FOR OVER 30 YEARS.

The old saying, “The first 12 days of January predict the 12 months of the same year,” just hasn’t panned out for the first two months.

January first and second both were clear and sunny. We had two good rains in January — about two weeks apart, ideal, and we have had one downpour so far in February. And just think, we are not knee deep in snow as last year.

Snow is predicted for next week, the temperature the last two mornings has been 10 degrees, and it is February!

Considering the weather and the every day political reports — some humor!

A woman in Missouri was suffering from cabin fever because of the snowy weather and decided to call a friend in Montana to complain about it because she knew their winters were even worse there.

Well, her reply put an end to the complaining from Missouri: “It’s so cold up here I saw a politician with his hands in his own pockets.”

To that I say, bring on the cold weather!

Since this is a leap year, and there are 29 days in this month, and Feb. 29 falls on a Wednesday, there are five Wednesdays this month. According to my list of records, this won’t happen again until 2040. Ah, yes, I know — who cares?

One evening last week, Diana Bradley, her daughter Felicia Ramirez and baby Sophia and friend Shelly Myers came by for a short visit. Little Sophia is a beautiful doll with coal- black hair, dark eyes and “rosebud” mouth. Oh, yes, we did get photos.

The annual Friends of the Lincoln Library Taste of Chocolate event didn’t quite sell out this year, though they did sell around 150 boxes. If you missed this last Saturday, you can still get some. The remainder has been placed in bags, available in the library for 50 cents each. What a deal!

For these cold days, heat up the oven and fix an easy, different side dish of potatoes:

1 envelope dry onion soup mix

4 medium potatoes, cut into large chunks 1/3 cup olive oil Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

In a 13x9 - inch backing pan, combine all ingredients until evenly coated.

Bake uncovered, stirring occasionally, 40 minutes or until potatoes are golden brown. Makes 4 servings. Happy birthday to Cooper Pretty, Wayne Andrews, Carol Pitts, Jeremy Lewis, Brian Freeman, Gavin Pitts, Paige Przyszczy pkewskis, Kevin Cox, Maxine King, Allee Lipford, Ella Mae Thurman and Jean Parker.

Happy first anniversary to Taylor and Sarah Bradley on Feb. 19. Happy years, all! Thought for the day: “When deeds speak, words are nothing.”
