Jean Myers Celebrates 90th Birthday Early

Lincoln Lifestyles

Today, as I watched the wind blowing the grass in waves across the field, I thought of the line in the song America the Beautiful — “Oh, Beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain,” and my paraphrase — “Oh, Beautiful, for spacious skies for shimmering waves of green grassland.”

America the Beautiful — Arkansas the Beautiful.

Though we have wondered about the unusually early spring, it is beautiful with everything green and so many colors.

The roses and irises are now putting on their own show. Now in bloom are irises in different shades of blues and yellows, purple, pink, and one I call my antique — a small bloom but beautiful, with edges of purple. The start of it was brought from Kansas in the 1880s by my grandparents.

One day last week I enjoyed a visit with a very interesting young person. Kirk Beatty, of Rogers, came by and asked where the Beaty Cemetery was located. We walked over the cemetery, and I showed him the Beaty headstones and the story behind some of them. He has a twin brother, Kent, and he plans to return with him, and he plans to write a story on the cemetery (he has joined a writing class in Siloam Springs).

This cemetery and community do have an interesting history; one item of interest is that Hagan Beaty, for whom the Lincoln Legion Post was named, is buried in Beaty.

Speaking of the cemetery, it is that time of year when maintenance of them is brought to mind, and this is very expensive. Any and all donations are welcome and sorely needed. If you have loved ones there, honor their memory by donating to the fund.

Anna and I made a quick trip to Muskogee, Okla., Friday afternoon to attend the 90th birthday celebration of my sister-in-law, Jean Myers. Her birthday is June 22, but for various reasons, some relatives could not attend then, so “better early than never.”

Four of her nieces and nephews and their spouses were there, including two from Illinois and two from Mississippi. The cake was beautiful, decorated in pink roses and served with ice cream. Jean still is her sweet beautiful self.

Happy birthday to Mark Latta, Marsha King, Denise Power, Don Bradley, Brandon Barbosa, Henry Huffaker, Billie Tucker, Bridgette Davis and Jon Durgan.

Happy anniversary to John and Lillian Griscom, their 14th on April 26, and to Craig and Sheryl Roy, their sixth on April 30.

Happy years, all!
