Lincoln Athletes Receive Awards

- By Mark Humphrey

LINCOLN — The Wolves’ baseball team went 29-5 and reached the state semifinals before losing 1-0 in a very tight game to the eventual champion, Genoa Central.

“I’m proud of every kid on the team and told them, ‘you’ve done a lot of great things,’” said Brad Harris, Lincoln head baseball coach.

Trenton Biggs and Zach Summers made All- State with Summers named to the West All- stars and named offensive player of the year for the Wolves. Lincoln had eight All-Conference players, including Biggs and Summers.

“We got the max number of kids on the All-Conference team,” Harris said, attributing the recognition to the Wolves going undefeated in conference play and winning the district tournament.

Dustin Simmons played catcher and hit .362 with 40 runs scored, accumulating 12 doubles, four home runs and 43 RBIs. Dustin Simmons had an on-base percentage of .496 and his 27 walks led the team.

Shane Perkins batted .296, had 43 runs scored, 13 doubles, 21 walks and made good on 16 of 18 stolen base attempts. Cheyenne Vaughn was recognized as an AllConference pitcher. Dakota Riggin hit .368 with 26 runs scored and 27 RBIs. Dalton Simmons hit .315, with 30 runs scored, eight doubles, a .456 on-base percentage, and led the team in drawing a base by being hit with a pitch nine times. Drew Harris also earned All-Conference honors as a freshman and was newcomer of the year for Lincoln.

There was a tie for Pitcher of the Year between Zach Summers, who pitched 60.2 innings with 82 strike outs, and Cheyenne Vaughn, with 76 innings pitched and 121 strikeouts. Defensive Player of the year went to Dakota Riggin.

Harris listed the top three web gems awards — First place — Dalton Simmons making a diving play in right field and throwing out a guy out at second base; second place — Dustin Simmons hitting for the cycle against Greenland; and third place — Drew Harris throwing a no-hitter against Pea Ridge.

The Lincoln defensive player of the year was Dakota Riggin while the Wolf award went to Jessie Claybrook, a sophomore, who Harris said does whatever you ask him including keeping the pitch count.

Harris described the Wolf Award as going to a player who may not always be a starter, yet is very committed to the team and is the kind who doesn’t miss practice. In football, the award went to Mitchell Phillips. Harris said the football Iron man award goes to a tough guy, who doesn’t come off the field, and went to Johnny Yang, an outside linebacker.

Athletes in other sports were recognized as well.
