July Is Family Reunion Month

Spring Came Early, Now Leaves Seem To Indicate An Early Fall

- MARIE ROY Enterprise-leader Columnist

As spring came early this year so it seems fall is coming early as well from the appearance of my yard.

There are piles of leaves shedding from the trees, a sight that is usually seen in October and November. Raking is taken care of when we should be still mowing instead.

But the real danger of this drought is the plight of the farmers. Some have said it takes great faith to be a farmer; others say he is a man of chance, a gambler. Yes, it takes great faith and they take a chance on every seed they sow and every swath they mow.

Yet there are many who don’t understand, such as the following ...

A man came up to a grocery check out and was complaining, “Look at these high prices, and those farmers are getting rich with their big fancy tractors, and we’re paying for them while they take in big bucks and make groceries go sky high.”

The clerk could only smile as she checked out his quart of motor oil, plas- tic ice chest, insect repellent, deodorant, small fan, aspirin ...”

Our prayers for, and thanks to, our farmers, the backbone of our nation and suppliers of our “daily bread.” Also for the safety of all who work out in the high temperatures.

It really is July and in addition to being family reunion and mobility month, it is the month for eating blueberries, baked ham, garlic, horseradish, hot dogs and ice cream, and it is grilling month.

And don’t forget the cold watermelon.

Happy birthday to Lucille Johnson, Allen Moore, Dale Hutchinson, Lynn Bush, Kathryn (Kate) Cheatham, Jack Chenowith, Clark Bailey, Helen Bailey and Mason Roy.

Happy anniversary to Trenton and Laura Pretty, their 12th on July 15. Happy years, all! Did you save some of your January and February magazines? If so, look them over, and enjoy the snow and ice scenes.
