Farmington Cardinal Seventh-graders Win First Game 22-8

- By Mark Humphrey

FARMINGTON — When facing third-down and 38 yards to go for a first-down, hand the ball off to your best running back and let him break a tackle.

That was the basic strategy employed by Farmington seventh-grade coach Spencer Adams against Huntsville and it paid big dividends.

The Farmington class of 2018 achieved a milestone by winning their first ever football game played for the school, 22-8, over Huntsville on Thursday.

Adams was pleased with the victory out of the gate, noting the Cardinals had a big game from runningback Caleb Williams, who not only picked up a first down on third-and-38, but scored a touchdown. After the offense went in reverse and found themselves with their backs to their own goal line, Williams raced around left end and cut back on his way to carry better than 98 yards that put six more Cardinal points on the scoreboard.

“He’s a good runner,” Adams said. “He’s going to have to carry the load a lot this year.”

Williams was equal to the task against the Eagles. He took the ball and ran left breaking tackles to open the scoring at the 13:40 mark of the firsthalf. Later in the half, Skyler Montez recorded a tackle for a loss and Farmington got the ball back after stopping a drive. On first down from the 30, Williams ran 70 yards to pay dirt for his second touchdown. He followed that up by catching the 2-point conversion pass and Farmington led 14-0 at halftime.

Williams’ long run came at the start of the second-half. Trey Waggle passed to Javin Jowers for the 2-point conver- sion and Farmington led 22-0. The Cardinal staff got every player into the game as the game went on and Huntsville eventually scored and then tacked on a 2-point conversion to make the final, 22-8, in favor of Farmington.

Adams praised the poise of quarterback Trey Waggle, whom he credited with doing a good job of managing the game and getting people in the right place.

“He didn’t get to throw it a whole lot, but when we did throw it, he threw it well,” Adams said.

Adams said played well.

“The first- team defense gave up only one or two first downs and reacted well to their formations,” Adams said.
