FARMINGTON — The junior Cardinal football team won their conference opener, 28-0, over Gentry on Sept. 20 with a bruising defense tempered by a big- play offense.

Farmington coach Tracy Sutton said he was very pleased with the defense, noting the junior Cardinals allowed -11 yards in rushing and under 50 total yards for the whole game.

Steven Piha had a 26-yard interception return. Coy Sigmon had two quarterback sacks. Charlie Woods had 4 solo tackles and 3 assists and Justice Hobbs had 4 tackles, 2 for losses.

When Farmington had the ball, the junior Cardinals produced points with big plays. Nick Huff caught three passes for 89 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns, including a 41-yard score. Hobbs, who ran 8 times for 55 yards, ran in the 2-point conversion and Farmington led 8-0.

Quarterback Brice Waggle threw for 108 yards with six completions in eight attempts with two touchdowns. Waggle also was the leading rusher with 91 yards on five carries, including a 61-yard touchdown run that put the junior Cardinals up 14-0.

“I’m very proud of Brice Waggle and how he is managing the game and getting the ball to where it needs to go,” Sutton said.

Huff scored on a 32-yard reception and Sigmon added the two point conversion giving Farmington a 22- 0 lead. Hobbs had the final touchdown on an 18-yard run.

Sutton said the team had a lot of changes due to some injuries and did a great job adjusting to all of it.

“Offensively, we did a great job considering we were down to our third team right guard,” Sutton said. “Joe Bunyard and Chad Reaves did a great job of stepping in and filling in and getting the job done there.”

The win bolstered Farmington to a 4-0 recording, going into a matchup with U.S. 62 rival Prairie Grove on Thursday at Allen Holland Field.

“This week’s game with Prairie Grove will go a long way for the winner having a great chance at conference championship,” Sutton said. “We will have to be able to tackle and not let them get any extra yards after contact.”
