- By Pat Harris

LINCOLN — Lincoln School Board members were rewarded at Monday’s meeting with gifts and words of appreciation from administrators.

Superintendent Clay Hendrix spoke about school boards of yesteryear.

“Or ig ina l ly school boards were the taxpayers who supported a school,” Hendrix said. “They elected the administration for the school. It was usually a teacher. Things have changed a lot from the one room schools.”

Hendrix told board members that today they are the ones responsible for finances, improvements and dealing with complicated issues.

“You give up time with your families, attend events and for all your sacrifices we thank you,” Hendrix told the five-member board.

“All our buildings look good. We’re proud of our schools, and we feel this is a big accomplishment,” Hendrix said.

“We are certainly a leader in technology in the region, state and I would even say nationally,” Hendrix said, giving school board members credit for the decisions they have made to bring about this hightech advancement.

“I also commend you for hiring the staff you have — we’re like family here,” Hendrix added. “All I have left to say is — be encouraged — we’re a progressive district.”

Hendrix then gave each school board member a glass apple paperweight engraved with the school year 2012- 2013, Lincoln School Board and name of member.

Each member also received a black and gray jacket with the same information printed on the front.

Hendrix was not the only one who praised the board.

High School Principal Mary Ann Spears thanked the board for “working hard” on the new Lincoln High School.

Michele Price, principal of Lincoln Middle School, told the board, “I’m a hometown girl and I appreciate all your help with the community.”

Marsha Hash, principal at Lincoln Elementary School, praised the board too. “On behalf of the leadership team, we appreciate your work and dedication.”

A number of parents, students and teachers attended the meeting in recognition of the school board. They applauded the members as administrators wrapped up their tributes.

School Board members include Dax Moreton, president; Kendra Moore, vice president; Jim Ayers, secretary; Scott Davis and Connie Meyer, members.

“What a wonderful surprise,” Moore told those who had heaped praise on her and other members.

“We don’t thank you enough, Moore said to the principals. “We appreciate your tireless efforts.”

“This was a very kind and thoughtful thing you have done,” said Ayers about recognition of the board’s work.

Meyer, who has served on school boards for 21 years, said there has been many changes. “It has been absolutely wonderful.”

Newest board member Scott Davis said he hoped to be a positive support for the school district.
