‘Lincoln’ Coming To Lincoln
LINCOLN — Abraham Lincoln will be visiting Lincoln, Ark., this month — on film, of course.
The movie “Lincoln,” directed by Steven Spielberg, received 12 Oscar nominations with one each for Daniel Day Lewis and Sally Field, who portray the president and his wife.
High School Principal Mary Ann Spears announced the special viewing of the movie in Lincoln at the January school board meeting.
Spears said she had heard from Active Voice, a California nonprofit organization, about the school district taking the lead in this endeavor.
“It won’t cost us anything,” Spears said. “They chose our city, one of eight across the nation, named Lincoln.”
The Lincoln School Board approved the viewing, however Kendra Moore, board vice-president, asked about the movie’s rating.
Spears said it is rated PG13.
Scott Davis, board member, suggested inviting local dignitaries to the event, which will be held at the auditorium at Lincoln Middle School, which is the former high school.
The movie, a historical drama, portrays Lincoln’s political drive to add the 13th Amendment to the Constitution in order to abolish slavery. Lincoln struggles in the film with congressional members, who had to approve its addition to the constitution.
Spears said the event would be handled by the high school technology class.
Superintendent Clay Hendrix said despite the school closing due to illness, the show would go on. “It’s still on schedule.”
Doors will open for a reception at 5 p. m. The movie will begin at 6 p.m.
