Lady Cardinals Heat Up

FARMINGTON REBOUNDS WITH 58-43 WIN OVER BERRYVILLE

- By Mark Humphrey

PRAIRIE GROVE — After an atrocious 13-for-46 shooting night, in a loss to Gravette, Farmington ( 18- 5, 9- 2) rebounded on Jan. 29 with a solid, 58-43, drubbing of Berryville (14-9, 4-7).

“We knew we would shoot the basketball a lot better, even after last Friday,” Farmington coach Brad Johnson said. “And we were not going to let that one game define us. I told the kids, great teams are often defined by how they respond to adversity or failure.”

Johnson said he felt the league was going to be watching to see how Farmington came out after the loss, and he thought the Lady Cardinals did a good job in preparation leading up to the game and came out and shot the basketball well.

Farmington shot a blistering 50 percent from beyond the 3-point land, hitting 9of-18 long range shots. The marksmanship offset a 14point second half performance by Berryville’s Sarah Johson.

Leading 30-15 at intermission, Farmington nailed a 3-pointer to answer every Berryville rally over the last two quarters.

Trifectas by Rene Scheyder (3-of-5) and Haley Maxwell ( 4- 6) were sandwiched around Johnson’s score on an inbounds play. Johnson was on and hit again but six seconds later Scheyder caught the Bobcats retreating and scored to keep Farmington ahead by 16, at 40-24, with 3:45 left in the third.

Britni Smith’s field goal drew Berryville to within, 4028, but Farmington reeled off the last 5 points of the third period including a 3-pointer by Scheyder and Maxwell’s transition bucket to finish a 2-on-1 fastbreak with Tichina Scales.

Farmington led 45-28 to start the fourth period and Berryville again reduced the lead to 12 near the four minute mark of the frame but Maxwell took a feed from Tiffany Rhame and converted an old fashioned 3-point play. Berryville sank a free throw only to have Maxwell connect on another trifecta on a pass out of the post from Kaci Sigmon.

Johnson was pleased with Farmington’s 58-43 win over what he said was a quality opponent.

“Berryville is a very athletic team, they’ve got five kids who can all jump, run and rebound. We had to put body on body, blocking out and getting the rebound and make sure we neutralize their ability to dribble penetrate.”

“This puts us in a spot to get one of those Regional tournament spots,” Johnson said. “Those things are golden in our league. We’re a little bit closer to that.”
