Lincoln Competing Well In New League

- By Mark Humphrey

LINCOLN — The Wolves couldn’t overcome a tough shooting night and lost to Berryville (13-9, 4-6), 57-48, on Jan. 25.

“It was a physical game. Overall, team- wise we didn’t shoot as well as we have been,” said Lincoln coach Tim Rich. “Playing in this league against a good, physical team you have to continue to shoot well, but our boys did some good things and kept us in the game even though we didn’t shoot well.”

Lincoln (10-10, 6-4) kept the game close despite the shooting of Berryville’s 6-foot-6 Josh Morrell, who was 7-of-9 from the field and 4-of-6 at the charity stripe. Morrell and the Bobcats’ Donnie Hoppe shared game honors with 18 points apiece with Austin Carr chipping in 14. Payton Hulse led Lincoln with 13 points.

Wolves Take Lions

To Wire

GRAVETTE —A road game at Gravette went down to the wire with the Wolves losing, 54-50, on Jan. 11.

Despite the loss, Lincoln coach Tim Rich was encouraged by the effort.

“These guys just continue coming out and playing. In this conference winning at home is hard and winning on the road is real hard,” Rich said. “We put ourselves in position to get the win, we just didn’t get the breaks at the end.”

Terence Pierce scored 35 points for Gravette but was the only Lion to reach double figures.

“We just went out and played our regular defense. He scored his 30 and we just tried to keep pace,” Rich said. “We didn’t do anything special for them, we just tried to keep playing sound defense like we have been doing.”

Pierce’s shooting percentages weren’t spectacu- lar. The 6- foot-3 Gravette junior went 6- of-16 from 3-point-land and was 12 of 27 overall. The Lions only hit 6 other field goals and Lincoln kept the game close — even at the end Gravette couldn’t pull away and eked out the win at the free throw line.

“They hit some key free throws when they forced us to foul,” Rich said.

Pulse (14) and Escareno (10) combined for 24 points to pace the Wolves.
