Box Tops Benefit Schools
PRAIRIE GROVE — Three seventh graders hope to encourage Prairie Grove citizens to cut out labels from certain products to benefit the school district.
Sydney Ruland, Ashlynn DeVore and Briell Nodier are students in EAST Lab at Prairie Grove Middle School. Each year, EAST students come up with projects to benefit the school or the community.
The students are partnering with Harps store in Prairie Grove and asking local residents to cut out the labels that are part of the Box Tops for Education program and return the labels to the store. Each box top is worth 10-cents.
Several of the schools in Prairie Grove participate in the Box Tops for Education program but residents who do not have children in the school district do not have a place to drop off box tops. The students’ project will provide a way for others in the community to be involved, said Tracie Ashley, EAST facilitator.
The students made tags to place on shelves in Harps to help shoppers know what products have the Box Top labels. Hundreds of items have the labels on the outside of the product package.
Harps is sponsoring its own competition in July, said Ashley Merrill, store manager. Harps will donate bonus box tops to its schools and will have a display contest among the stores. The seven top stores will receive 10,000 bonus box tops, worth $1,000, for the school of their choice. Winners will be based on the creativity of their displays.
Ashley said the school district uses its money from Box Top labels for many things, including field trips and to purchase treats for reward days.
