Farmington Fireworks Show Set For July 6

- By Lynn Kutter ENTERPRISE-LEADER

FARMINGTON — The city of Farmington will once again host the annual fireworks display to celebrate the fourth of July and citizens will be allowed an extra day to shoot off their own personal fireworks.

This year’s Freedom Fest will be held Saturday, July 6 at the Farmington High football stadium. The fireworks show will go off at dark, around 9 p. m. The city is paying $5,200 for the fireworks.

Because Freedom Fest is being held after July 4, the Farmington City Council, during a special meeting Monday, voted to amend the city’s fireworks ordinance to allow citizens to discharge fireworks from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday, July 6. This amendment only applies when July 4 falls on a Thursday and the city’s fireworks display is held on the Saturday following the holiday.

The city of Farmington also allows residents to discharge fireworks the following days: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., on July 3 and 5; 10 a.m. to midnight, July 4.

The public is invited to come to Freedom Fest, bring chairs and blankets and enjoy the fireworks show and celebrate Independence Day.

The Farmington Area Kiwanis Club has sponsored Freedom Fest for the past four or five years but is not organizing the event this year, according to Kara Gardenhire, Kiwanis president. In years past, Freedom Fest has included live music, food, games and different vendors.

The Kiwanis is helping with the Miss Freedom Fest pageant, which will be held at 6: 30 p. m., Friday, July 5 at Williams Elementary School.

Contestants in the pageant will compete in seven age divisions and trophies will be awarded in several areas. The pageant entry fee is $ 40 with optional fees for other categories, including Most Beautiful, Best Dressed, Most Photogenic and talent.
