Depression Changes Perspectives

- Troy Conrad PASTOR TROY CONRAD IS MINISTER OF THE FARMINGTON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH.

Autopilot is only for airplanes. Life is precious — stay engaged and present to every moment.

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24

We all get depressed from time to time. Depression is a horrible disease that changes who we are and how we interact with those around us. When depression strikes it’s hard to see anything in a positive light, even though we may have dozens of people who love us for who we are, we see people who hate us for the person we’ve become.

In our society we see the extremes of depression in people and tend to tailor our treatments to the extremes. But there are thousands, hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions of people who suffer from depression and don’t know it.

They feel lost, not sure of who they are or why they are in this world. They have what they think is a deadend job or a horrible boss. Family problems seem to be more prevalent and friends only get together to drink and rail at the world around them.

They know there is something better out there but don’t know how to get it. They know there is something bigger than themselves that they can be a part of but don’t know where to start.

They have either lost, forgotten or never known the joy of life that comes from loving God. Make this a joyful day. And do that by doing what the scripture verse says. Honor and love God first. And then take that happiness with you throughout the day.
