School Begins Earlier Than Before

- MARIE ROY IS A LIFELONG RESIDENT OF LINCOLN AND HAS WRITTEN FOR THE ENTERPRISE­LEADER FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS.

Is this really August? We’ve had many days of fresh air — open house with no air conditione­r turned on. With 50-degree temperatur­es at night and 70s in the day with fog on some mornings.

It’s easy to forget dates on the calendar and enjoy. Hopefully, September will be similar with some good rainfall.

School is already in session, two full weeks sooner than “back in the day,” when we always expected to start the day after Labor Day. I can remember when those first days were usually real hot — the only air conditioni­ng was open windows, hoping for a breeze.

coupon, be kind to editors and writers month; also Labor Day, Grandparen­ts’ Day, Patriot Day ( 9- 11), POW-MIA Day; birthstone is sapphire; flower is aster. Now some humor: Bob thought to buy his wife a present. He asked the clerk about some perfume. She showed him a bottle costing $50.

He said, “That’s too much.” So she showed him a $30 bottle.

He said, “That’s still too much. What else do you have?”

The impatient clerk then brought out a tiny bottle for $15.

“What I mean,” fussed Bob, “Is that I want to see something really cheap.” So she handed him a mirror.

Troy Bradley recently spent a week in Kansas City, where he visited and attended a 60th reunion of his high school graduating class of 1953. Eleven members of the class were able to again attend a reunion after 60 years. That’s something to celebrate!
