Autumn Is Time For Festivals
Hopefully, the weather man is right this time, calling for showers and cooler weather. After all, this Sunday is the first day of autumn.
Autumn in our area means fair festivals, homecomings, reunions and so on — so much to celebrate leading up to Thanksgiving and before we know it, Christmas. Busy times.
Washington County Fair and Prairie Grove Clothesline Fair have ended and from all reports both were very successful.
This weekend, Sept. 21-22, is the date for the Cane Hill Harvest Festival, celebrating the past with demonstrations of making lye soap, sorghum, apple butter, crafts — all for sale; the present with booths, music, food; and planning the future with revenue for planned renovations of the Cane Hill College. The weekend is always full of interest for all ages.
Of course, excitement and plans are in full gear for the 37th annual Apple Festival in Lincoln. Just two more weeks.
To continue honoring a request of many years ago, an apple recipe:
Walnut Applesauce Pie
1 cup packed brown sugar 1/3 cup sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1 egg plus 1 egg white 2/ 3 cup unsweetened applesauce 2 tablespoons milk 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup chopped walnuts 1 unbaked 9-inch pastry shell
In a mixing bowl, combine sugars and flour; add egg, egg white, applesauce, milk and vanilla; mix well, stir in walnuts. Pour into pastry shell and bake at 375-degrees for 40-45 minutes or until set. Cool completely. Serve with whipped cream if desired. Store in refrigerator.
