field goal, then after Simmons ran for eight yards on a jet sweep, Pitts snagged a 12-yard scoring pass. Dover finally showed some life offensively, picking up a first down and moving to their 45 and getting a good punt that rolled dead at Lincoln’s 10 but the Pirates were again caught looking and not making plays.
Alec Pitts hauled in a short pass against one-on-one coverage and would not be caught. Pitts juked past the Dover cornerback, then raced down the left sideline for a 90-yard touchdown.
“We had actually called a run play in the set,” said Lincoln coach Brad Harris. “They had only one guy out there and Drew hitched it up to Alec. One of the things we talked about this week was if they come out in a box and there’s only one guy on a receiver, this is what we’re going to do and let him make a play.”
“We just keep working and try to get some of our injuries back,” said Dover coach Greg Smith, whose team played without a pair of runningbacks.
The Pirates were limited to 55 yards of total offense in the 52 plays they ran against Lincoln with a passing performance of a single completion in five attempts for negative yardage.
“We did a great job of executing our game plan and laying licks on people,” said Lincoln defensive coordinator Jim Meyers in the post-game team huddle.
Lincoln celebrates its Homecoming on Friday against Berryville at 7 p.m. The festivities get underway at 6:30 p.m.
