WOLVES DESTROY PIRATES 71-0

- By Mark Humphrey

DOVER — Friday’s football game featured the best of times for Lincoln and the worst of times for Dover with the end result, a 71-0 runaway victory for Lincoln.

“The offensive line did a great job tonight,” said junior quarterback Drew Harris. “I didn’t have any pressure, which allowed me to sit in the pocket and pick apart the defense.”

Dover played right into Lincoln’s hands beginning with an attempted onside kick to start the game despite looking at 10 Wolves on the line of scrimmage and only a single receiver deep. Lincoln fell on the ball and took over at their own 48 finding the end zone in five plays with Drew Harris passing to Dalton Simmons for a touchdown.

“We started out early with screens and stuff. Our receivers made it happen,” Drew Harris said. “I couldn’t ask for a better receiving corps, they got open and I hit them.”

Drew Harris came out hot, completing his first six passes for 80 yards and a 14-0 Lincoln lead on a 30-yard hookup with Simmons at the 6:50 mark of the first period. He then punctuated Lincoln’s third drive with a 21-yard score on a quarterback keeper which led to a 21-0 Lincoln advantage after Emilio Maruffo’s kick.

Maruffo expertly sent the kickoff backspinning to a dead stop inside the Dover 10 and the Pirates almost didn’t cover the ball and had to start from their own nine. Brandon Crews and Dusty Hudson combined for a sack at the three and on second down, Crews broke through from the corner and upended Dover quarterback Luke Price for a safety and a 23-0 Lincoln cushion.

“I was pretty pumped and got my hopes high,” Crews said. “I think we got in their heads a little bit. I got a safety in the end zone, I think it turned the tide in our favor.”

Time and time again, Dover crowded the line of scrimmage and got burned on the wings. Simmons capped off a record-setting first quarter with a 70-yard touchdown reception as Lincoln opened up a 30-0 lead.

In the second, Maruffo answered a penalty with a 48-yard
