PRAIRIE GROVE — The Prai
rie Grove golfing program enjoyed a great deal of post season success this year, with the girl’s golf team earning a second place finish in the district tournament and a sixth place finish in the 4A state tournament.
The Tigers also had one state qualifier from the boy’s program.
The girls, making their first trip to the state tourney in four years, got a sterling performance from senior Cecilia Gasca, who shot a 97 at the 4A-1 district tournament held at Farmington’s Valley View course on Sept. 24. Gasca’s score was good enough for second place, a mere two shots off the lead.
“Cecilia has improved so much over her career,” said Tigers’ golf coach Mitch Cameron. “This season she has proven that she can compete with just about any team’s number one player.”
Emily Sapp followed Gasca on the score card by shooting a 103, while Abby Bostain closed out the tournament with a 106. Those scores helped the Lady Tigers place second behind the Ozark Hillbillies in the district tourney and allowed the team to advance to the state tournament.
“Emily and Abby have only played for two years each, but I bet they have shaved off thirty strokes from their score since they started. Their future looks good,” Cameron said.
The Lady Tigers traveled to Blytheville on Oct. 2 for the state tournament held at the Thunder Bayou golf course. Bostain led the Tigers with a low score of 99, followed by Gasca who shot a 105 and Sapp who finished the day with a 114. Those scores were good enough for the Tigers to finish in sixth place behind Valley View, Central Arkansas Christian, Ozark, Arkansas Baptist and Heber Springs.
“I’m very proud of this team. They set a goal to make it to state and showed a lot of dedication and heart to get there,” Cameron said.
The Prairie Grove boy’s program placed one golfer in the state tournament. Chris Stewart finished in fourth place at the 4A-1 district tournament by shooting an 88. The freshman then travelled to Blytheville on October 9 for the state tournament where he matched his district score by shooting another 88.
“Chris strikes the ball well, has a good approach and does a good job with the putter. He’s a young freshman so I look forward to what he can accomplish in the years to come,” concluded Cameron.
