Lady Cards Swoop Down On Pioneers

- By Mark Humphrey

FARMINGTON — Feeling more comfortable in their new roles after coach Marshall Ward implemented wholesale changes with five players playing new positions, Farmington aggressively attacked sweeping Gentry, 25-12, 26-24, 25-14, on Oct. 8.

“That’s what we’ve tried to, attack more,” Marshall Ward said. “We’ve changed to a two-setter system. It’s going better, I’m liking it.”

Gentry took a 3-0 lead in the game, notching a point after a pair of consecutive blocks by Haley Borgenteien-James, Farmington then capitalized on a 20-6 run spurred by aces from Bethany Doty and Oakley Sisemore and kills from Maria McPherson and Janna Doss to go up 20-9 and rolled to a 25-12 victory.

Gentry led throughout game two but squandered a 20-16 advantage with Sisemore smashing a pair of kills and then delivering an ace to tie the contest at 21-all. The Pioneers reached game-point but the Cardinals fought back to win, 26-24.

Farmington dominated game three, winning easily, 25-14, to sweep the match three games to none.

“The loss in a very tight game took the wind out of our sails for the third set,” said Gentry coach Darren Ward.

Darren Ward said Farmington did a good job of executing quick hits which bothered the Pioneers.

Farmington is learning and adapting.

“We all really good friends, we’re pretty much like sisters,” Sisemore said. “We’re all pretty flexible and we can learn pretty fast.”
