Park Holds ‘Green Friday’

- By Pat Harris

PRAIRIE GROVE — Is there an alternative to “Black Friday? Yes, there is, “Green Friday” at Prairie Grove Battlefield Park.

Jessee Cox, park superintendent, said “Green Friday” was a program developed by Arkansas State Parks as an alternative to people going shopping on the day after Thanksgiving.

“It’s for thinking about a different family tradition — getting outdoors rather than going to crowded stores and malls with crowds,” Cox said. “Instead take time with family, kids and friends and head to the trails. And in our case go to the museum, Hindman Hall, and share the history of this area.”

“Come out to the park and enjoy history and nature at no cost,” said Holly Houser, historical park instructor, in a news release.

Visitors can hike the battlefield, watch wildlife, have a picnic or just enjoy the scenery, according to Houser.

“Celebrate the season in a relaxing way with friends and family and reconnect to things that matter,” Houser said. “This event is about going green by having a great time without spending a fortune and making special park memories this holiday weekend with friends and family.”

If visitors do want to do some shopping, Houser said the Ladies’ Auxiliary Gift Shop will be holding a special sale during “Green Friday” weekend, Nov. 29 through Dec. 1.

The shop will also hold Christmas Open House, Dec. 6-8. The park gift shop has a large selection of books and over 100 items including books, jewelry and souvenirs.

During “Green Friday,” the park plans on decorating park grounds for Christmas Open House. Anyone who would like to help, go by the park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., said Houser.

Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park protects the site of a Civil War battle fought on Dec. 7, 1862, where fierce fighting between Confederate and Union soldiers resulted in 2,700 casualties. The battle marked the last major engagement of the Civil War in northwest Arkansas.

The park is open daily 8 a. m. to 5 p.m. It will be closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christ- mas Day.

Anyone who would like to volunteer at the park, call 479-846-2990 or email Holly. Houser@arkansas.gov.
