Weather Disrupts Bi-County Tournament

- By Mark Humphrey

LINCOLN — With a winter front moving into the region, sporting events across Northwest Arkansas were canceled or put off last week and the Bi-County tournament held at Lincoln was no exception.

After playing games on Monday and Wednesday, the storm dumped snow and sleet on top of freezing rain to create hazardous travel conditions and Thursday’s games were postponed. When the tournament resumed, Prairie Grove won the girls bracket.

The Lincoln girls lost to West Fork, 29-18, in the first-round of the Bi-County tournament on Dec. 2. Both teams had trouble scoring in the opening stanza with West Fork holding a 4-2 edge.

In the second quarter the Tigers outscored Lincoln by a 7-4 margin to go up, 11-6, at halftime. Lincoln’s best quarter came in the third period when the Lady Wolves notched a total of 10 points trimming the deficit to 19-16 at the end of the third but could only score two points the rest of the way.

“Right now, we’re not shooting well,” said Lincoln coach Deon Birkes. “We missed 13 free throws that hurts bad but they keep playing hard and they don’t quit, that’s a big step.”

Kendra Cummings topped Lincoln with seven points followed by Malorie Cagle with five; Emily Dayberry, 2; Jessica Goldman, 2; Taylor Cunningham, 1; and Hollie Webb, 1.

West Fork was led in scoring by Griffin with 10 and Greenlee with nine points.

Huntsville defeated the Springdale Lakeside girls team, 54- 8. Lakeside is a brand new junior high in Springdale and was handicapped by an administra- tive decision allowing all eighth grade girls, who had attended Springdale George Junior High last year to continue going to school there although they now reside within the Lakeside boundaries.

Huntsville built a 32-0 lead with Lakeside going scoreless in the first period. Lakeside avoided a first-half shutout when Aliyah Brown scored a driving left-handed lay-in with 34 seconds left in the half. The Eagles led 52-4 after three periods of play and inserted reserves throughout the final frame. Despite the big lead, Huntsville maintained a defensive intensity and only surrendered a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter on their way to the blowout, 54-8, victory.
