Poetry For Christmas Season
‘This is a season to rejoice — yet, looking around some decades ago, I wrote the following:
“Signs of Our Times”
Once again, as every year, We bring you news of Christmas cheer.
Shining ornaments, wrappings bright,
Snow, icicles, light up night.
Trees with cotton, balls and lights.
People looking at beautiful sights.
Sleds and sleighs, skates and boats.
Cheers, parades, bands and floats.
Guns and holsters, trucks and cars,
Tractors and spaceships from Mars.
Dolls and dishes, sets for tea,
Things to make a little girl happy. Little angels, sleepy heads, Don’t have to be told to go to bed. Happy little girls and boys, Filling Christmas with cheer and joy.
Christmas baking, mysterious smells,
Cookies shaped like stars and bells.
Salads, dressing , turkey, hams,
Nuts, fruits and candied yams.
Baking, shopping, decorating,
Wrapping gifts, anticipating.
Crowded streets, stores and shops,
Walking, driving, starts and stops.
Exchanging gifts, sure to get
Something that’s sure not to fit.
Working, rushing, worrying, ills,
Change the diet to headache pills.
Incidentally, Christmas morn
Marks the day that Christ was born. — Marie Roy During these past years, things have changed to more expensive and materialistic, but one thing never changes — the reason for the season, as we celebrate the day of the most important birth ever (and it rates more than just a footnote).
