Lightning Delay Disrupts Softball Action

- By Mark Humphrey

FARMINGTON — The Lady Cardinals built a 2-0 lead in their opening at-bat and held such an advantage over Greenwood when the game was delayed by lightning after the second inning.

A few scattered raindrops appeared in the bottom of the second inning before the plate umpire spotted lightning in the clouds to the west and halted the game after the Lady Cardinals went down in order.

The weather put a damper on Friday’s softball game with a steady downpour following about 30 minutes after the delay began. Moisture descended from the heavens with an occasional burst of lightning but in the first inning the Lady Cardinals created some fireworks of their own.

Leadoff hitter Oakley Sisemore got on base with a triple and Sarah Beth Jones turned a bunt into a double by blazing around the infield and frustrating Greenwood fans. With two runners in scoring position, Brooke Larkin fouled off the first pitch, then took ball one allowing Sisemore to score on a wild pitch.

Larkin then drove in a second Lady Cardinal run with a bunt but was thrown out at first. With the bases empty and two out Lindsey Blackburn reached second on an error when a pair of Bulldogs collided in left field. Farmington could not bring her home and settled for a 2-0 advantage at the end of the first inning.

When play resumed Sisemore did more damage to Greenwood by scooting around the bases for an inside- the- park home run in the third inning. Jordin Smith started and threw the first five innings for Farmington to get the 4-2 win.
