Chicken Holler Gardening Mecca

- By Lynn Kutter

FARMINGTON — With home gardens becoming more popular across the country, Chicken Holler in Farmington is the place to go to get started on a spring and summer garden.

Chicken Holler has been in the lawn and garden business and wood stove business in the same location at 230 W. Main St., for 36 years, since 1977. It is owned by Jimmy and Carla Gibson.

With rising food costs and questions about pesticides and other chemicals, more people are interested in growing their own fruits and vegetables, Carla Gibson said.

Vegetables include many varieties of tomatoes, onions, eggplants and peppers. For example, Gibson said, the store has more than 40 varieties of tomato seeds and tomato plants. Chicken Holler also has fruit trees, grape plants and berry plants.

For customers who want to spruce up their yards, the store carries trees, shrubs, perennials, hanging baskets and annuals. Other items for sale include lawn ornaments, windchimes, bird feeders, garden statues and more.

Chicken Holler is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday. For the spring months, March-May, it is also open on Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Carla and Jimmy Gibson appreciate the loyalty of their customers who have kept them in business over the years and are looking forward to seeing their gardening friends again this spring.

The business is named after the chicken farm where Carla Gibson grew up. Her parents first opened Chicken Holler and the Gibsons have owned it since 1989.
