Remembering 1928 Tornado

- MARIE ROY WCN Columnist MARIE ROY IS A LIFELONG RESIDENT OF LINCOLN AND HAS WRITTEN FOR THE ENTERPRISELEADER FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS.

As I listened last week to the forecast of possible tornadoes, I thought of the date April 4, 1928, when a tornado came through north of Lincoln. It demolished six houses and irreparably damaged another and caused three deaths.

Now it seems that such storms happen any time of the year not just in spring as they once did. When I see an object hung on a fence or tree, I see the picture in my mind from that tornado 86 years ago of bedding, clothes and other things hung in trees and on fences in the storm’s aftermath.

It was just like the good old days last Tuesday, when members of the kitchen band met and again with their type of music brought fun and laughter to the Lincoln Senior Center. With new members, there were 15 present for the enjoyment. The band plans to continue meeting at 10 a.m. each Tuesday at the center. All who wish to join in the fun are welcome.

Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars not only risked their lives to fight in a war, to protect our free- doms, they continue to serve and give to their fellow men. Some years ago, members of local post No. 4675 replaced for us a worn flag used to fly at the Beaty Cemetery. More recently, in learning that the second flag was worn and torn, Ed Marshall, a member of the post, obtained a replacement — one that had actually flown over our U.S. Capitol, another example of their service.

Thank you, Veterans, for everything.

Happy birthday to Donald Mounce, Emily Pitts, Keldon Bennett, Jessie Curtis, Bob Yancey, Joey Cox, Karen Williams.

Happy anniversary to Keith and Dawn Myers, David and Sherry Mark, Jim and Patti Stickler.

Happy years, all.
