Why Going To Church Is Important

- Troy Conrad TROY CONRAD IS PASTOR OF FARMINGTON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH.

Too many people spend more time planning how they will spend their weekend than they spend in their whole life planning how they will spend eternity.

“Be very careful, then, how you live — not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” Ephesians 5:15-17

Have you picked out what you’re wearing to church on Sunday?

Have you read the Sunday School lesson?

What about reading the daily scriptures leading up to Sunday?

One of the things in recent years that has become “vogue” is not to be a part of a church. I’ve heard many, many times, “I can worship God just as well on the golf course.” Or, “I love God, I just can’t stand religion.”

The first thing Jesus did when He started his formal ministry was to call people to Him. He continued to develop the first church and after His ascension He left instructions to continue to gather together. The apostles Paul and Peter go on and on about how important church is. And John of Patmos’ ( the guy who wrote The Revelation of Jesus Christ) wrote “Little children. Love one another.”

Jesus went to the synagogues and temples. Peter and Paul preached there and started new churches.

If church was good enough for Jesus then why isn’t it good enough for us?

A Lutheran preacher who was executed by Hitler during WWII once said, “You can have neither sin nor holiness in isolation.” And I whole- heartedly believe that. Christianity is all about fellowship. When we come together to worship God that’s when we feel the closest to God’s presence.

Worship isn’t just something our grandparents used to do. It’s a command from God. Our days are filled with evil tidings. Shouldn’t it be a relief that God has given us one day to be released from all that? Let us pray. God our Father, creator of all, today is a day of joy. May the risen Lord breathe on our minds and open our eyes that we may know him. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
