Newspaper Staff Gets 19 Awards

Washington County Enterprise-Leader staff received 19 awards at the annual Arkansas Press Associatio­n convention and awards luncheon held Saturday in Hot Springs.

Entries for the APA Better Newspaper Contest were for stories, photos, special sections and photo pages from 2013 coverage.

First place winners were Pat Harris, editor, for coverage of education; Lynn Kutter, reporter, for best beat reporter; Mark Humphrey, sports reporter, for sports news story and headline writing; Ben Madrid, freelance sports reporter, for freelance writing.

Harris’ education coverage included stories and photos of the Lincoln School District.

Kutter’s police beat reporting was coverage of Prairie Grove and Farmington law enforcemen­t.

Humphrey’s sports reporting included a story about a Farmington Track Meet runner. He covered sports in Farmington, Lincoln and Prairie Grove.

Madrid covered Prairie Grove Tigers news.

Second place awards included Maylon Rice, columnist, for news/political column; Mark Humphrey for sports feature story, sports column and single sports feature photograph; Lynn Kutter for single feature photograph; Humphrey, Harris and Kutter for best special issue/section.

Third place awards included Pat Harris, best beat reporter and general interest column; Mark Humphrey, sports news story.

Honorable mention awards included Pat Harris for feature story; Mark Humphrey, sports feature story; Humphrey, Kutter and Harris, picture page/photo essay.

Enterprise- Leader staff also received a third place General Excellence award.

The Tennessee Press Associatio­n judged this year’s competitio­n, choosing from 1,865 entries from 21 daily newspapers and 32 weekly newspapers.
