HUNTSVILLE — The Farmington Cardinals (2-0) continued to look impressive in the early part of the season after they destroyed the Huntsville Eagles 39-6 Friday in a contest played at Huntsville in wet and muddy conditions.

The Cardinal offense, particularly the ground- game, was unstoppable against the Eagles, rolling up 394 yards against their Madison County opponent. Farmington’s rushing attack, led by Justice Hobbs, tallied 381 yards. Hobbs single- handily exploded for 260 yards while scoring 4 touchdowns in the process. Hobbs lauded the performance of his offensive line after the contest, saying, “Our line is doing a heckuva job getting on people and staying with them.”

Farmington’s defense was equally impressive when they were on the field, holding Huntsville to a paltry 159 yards. T.J. Askegaard led the defensive unit with 10 tackles, while Levi Green and Morgan Lewis each had 5 takedowns apiece. Green also recorded a fumble recovery.

Farmington marched 72 yards on their first series and closed out the drive with a touchdown after Brice Waggle connected with a leaping Michael Ingram in the back of the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown, which made the score 6-0. Hobbs scored his first touchdown on the Cards’ next series when he capped off a 61-yard drive with a 5-yard dash to pay dirt making the score 12-0.

Huntsville’s only highlight of the contest came with 1:51 left in the opening period when Christian Cain galloped for a 49-yard touchdown which closed the gap to 12- 6. On the ensuing kickoff Josh Blew reeled off a 42-yard return which allowed the Cardinals to setup shop at the Eagle 40 yard line. With a minute ticked off the second quarter clock, Hobbs punched in his second touchdown, bulling his way in from 5-yards out and swelling Farmington’s advantage to 18-6.

With 5:39 left before half Hobbs nearly went untouched from 16-yards out for his third touchdown, and Waggle connected with Nick Huff on the 2- point try making the score 26- 6. The Cards travelled 61 yards on their first series after intermission, concluding with a 6-yard Blew touchdown run which made the score 32-6. Blew complemented Hobbs’ rushing performance with an 89-yard effort on eight carries for the contest.

Hobbs concluded the scoring extravaganza with 2:39 left in the third frame when he punched in a touchdown from 3 yards out. Hobbs then added the PAT, bringing the final score to 39-6.

“We wanted to run the football tonight because of the conditions which really wasn’t conducive to throwing the football,” said Cardinal coach Mike Adams. “Our offensive line did a super job and we were able to keep moving the football.”

The Cardinals get their first home game on Friday when they welcome the Van Buren Pointers. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
