FARMINGTON — Long-time Alderwoman Janie Steele and Farmington resident Linda Bell are vying to represent Ward 2, Position 2 on the Farmington City Council.

Steele, 74, said she has continued to serve on the City Council because she loves this community and cares about Farmington’s rich history and its future growth. Her relatives came to this area in the 1800s and she has lived here most of her life.

“Most people know that I am active on the City Council and contact me with their concerns and ideas,” Steele wrote in a profile form filled out by local candidates. “I have been and will continue to share their concerns and ideas with other City Council members.”

Bell, 58, is a native of Northwest Arkansas. She and her husband have lived in Farmington for 12 years. Her children, their spouses and her five grandchildren also live in Farmington.

“So, for the future of my children, grandchildren and all the residents of Farmington, I have a strong vested interest in our community and how our city government can best serve the citizens of Farmington,” Bell wrote. “I firmly believe it’s healthy and beneficial for local government to have fresh ideas and new perspectives.”

Bell has been a registered nurse for 34 years, 29 years of that in management. She is a certified case manager with Genex Services LLC. She said she believes her experiences as a registered nurse and in management will help her as a council member. Her responsibilities have included managing budgets and she’s been instrumental in revenue and operational growth.

“I have a dedicated work ethic and strong communication skills. Most of all, I am committed to this community and its growth,” Bell stated.

Steele, who is retired, has served the community in other areas. She was a member of the Farmington Planning Commission, serves on the city’s Parks and Recreation Committee and is involved with the Cemetery Committee, which oversees Farmington Cemetery. She started the city’s Historical Preservation Committee and has been researching the city’s history in several areas. Accomplishments while on the council include the sports complex and the strong financial shape of the city.

If re-elected, Steele said her goals include expanding Creekside Park to add another pavilion, more parking and another basketball court. She also would like to see bike and walking trails in Farmington that eventually would connect with the Fayetteville trails system.

Steele wrote that she would like to continue to serve to help the Council complete its goal of making improvements to Highway 170.

If elected, Bell said she would work in partnership and collaboration with the City Council and community leaders to try and ensure continued growth and opportunity without losing the essence of the city’s identity.

In closing, both women made statements about their candidacies.

“I believe it’s time for a new voice, fresh ideas, and renewed energy in partnership with our City Council. I’m very proud of our town and would be honored to have the opportunity to serve you as your Alderman for Ward 2, Position 2,” Bell said.

Steele wrote, “I am proud of the fact that our community is a safe place to live. The fire department, police department, and city staff all work well together. By serving on the City Council, I can continue to make Farmington a great place to call home.”
