When We Can’t See What’s Going On

- Troy Conrad PASTOR TROY CONRAD IS MINISTER OF THE FARMINGTON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH.

Those who walk with God always reach their destination.

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” John 14:6

Back in college my fraternity decided to put together a haunted house for a fundraiser.

My church had done several haunted houses before and even a few haunted forests so I was put in charge of the project.

We found an old, spooky three-story house to rent and so we got together planning what rooms would hold what scary event.

One room in particular became an instant hit with the crowd.

It was our room of darkness.

Basically it was a completely dark room. From the ceiling we had hung strings down to about head height.

When you entered the room you couldn’t see the strings.

The guide would tell the crowd to hold hands and if they felt a spider not to scream because it would just make them mad. Oh the humanity. We had grown men screaming like two year olds. People were visibly shaking when they came out of the room.

More than one bolted and smacked into a wall trying to find their way out.

For some we had to turn the light on so that they could see that it was just strings and not a roomful of spider webs.

When we can’t see where we’re going or what’s happen- ing around us that’s when our imaginations go wild.

Except when it comes to God.

Jesus said blessed are those who believe but not see.

He was telling this to doubting Thomas.

The apostle who insisted on seeing the resurrected Christ. In order to draw close to God it means that we are purposefully seeking after God.

If we wait around for a sign or a particular prayer to be answered in order to believe in God it means we’ve missed the entire point. If we place conditions on God it means all we need God for is to answer our own needs and desires. We are asking for something, not offering something.

But see that’s when God comes close to us. When we are offering something.

The widow offered her last two coins.

Mary offered a jar of anointing oil. Joseph offered a tomb and Philemon open the doors to his home.

When we offer instead of take, then that’s when we really see God at work in our lives.
