Home Extension Clubs Remembered

For the 100th anniversar­y of the Homemakers Extension clubs, we tell the history and honor the memory of those long gone. Thanks to Gwen Schube for the following informatio­n of one group.

Cane Hill and Skylight clubs organized around 1920. County agents demonstrat­ed new technology in canning, sewing, gardening, etc. in members’ homes. Meetings centered around prayer, news, projects, a meal and fellowship.

Early Cane Hill members were Daisey Delap, Anne Yates, Alice Pyeatte, Eric Miller, Gladys Karnes, Mayme Mills, Leota and Wanda Irwin, Beulah, Bess and Henry McCellen, Ethel Marlar, Alta Roberson, Lisa King, Mary Lou Russell, Marjory Skin- ner, Louise McArdell, Pearl Watkins, Mary Shaw and Clem Pyeatte.

Skylight’s members were Gather McCamish and daughters Vernice, Gladys, Octavia, Neva and Neta, Olive Spinks, Leatha Hite, Gertrude Smith, Florida Smith and her two sisters.

In 1992-1993, Cane Hill and Skylight merged to become Sky Hill Club. Members were Ester Reed, Bonnie Haegele, Barbara Boosted, Barbara Hodson, Frances and Eva Hayes, Becky Smith, Pearl Watkins, Hazel Lemons, Vernice Reed, Neva and Octavia McCam- ish, Gwen Harding, Marilyn Capone, Gertrude Smith, Leatha Hite, Betty Colburn, Betty Miller, Alena Taylor, Alta VanBrunt. Bonnie Haegele became Washington County Homemaker of the year in 1993.

They now have 18 members, three of whom are men. They meet in the Clyde Community Church each second Tuesday. Their agenda includes many service projects, including Fayettevil­le Veteran’s home, Seven Hills, Operation Gratitude, Prairie Grove Health and Rehab, Little Rock Children’s hospital. Also, they make turbans for cancer patients.
