Memories Of Lincoln Days Gone By

- MARIE ROY WCN Columnist

As I drove around the square this morning, the condition of the ground was very noticeable, where the grass had been trampled, some dead, some completely gone; but the grass will grow back, just as the memories of the weekend and the last 40 years, will live on.

I thought of the first festival, the aroma of the Floro family’s pork rinds, Banita Spark’s works of art booth, Faye Huber and her red pepper jelly, and Jeannie Meyer’s booth of nice ceramics, among many others.

Back then, whole families who had grown up here, came back for reunions and the festival. Some were the Collins, Turner, and Yeager families — all ” old timers” and most gone now. But oh, those memories!

Then, in the “old” Senior Center, we served breakfast, real homemade biscuits, made by Doris Colburn, sausage, gravy, the whole works. (One man paid full price for the meal of a biscuit and sausage sandwich, several times.)

In the V.F.W. the specialties were omelet and fried apple pies. Some of these pies went by the boxful to California, Michigan, and Texas.

I could write a book on the 40 years’ festivities if only my “Senior Moments” were not so often.

It has been suggested that next year’s festival committee include the theme of the floats in the brochures, as well as any rules regarding the floats’ building. This year, it wasn’t public knowledge.

Tuesday, Lorene Schooler presented the prize money from the Kitchen Band float to Center director Tina Batlle to help on the center expenses. Every little bit helps.

Happy birthday to: Sandy Norton, Bill Baker, Eden Cochran, J.D. Roberts, Marietta Morris, James Nash, Kendrick Bentley, Darlene Cheatham, Herman Cox, Ruth Andrews, Ashley Wofford, Dalton Bradley.

Happy anniversary to: Jim and Rebecca Ayers. Happy years, all! Have a SONshine day
