City Plans First Tree Lighting Ceremony

- By Lynn Kutter

FARMINGTON — Farmington, along with a visit from Santa Claus, will ring in December with an old-fashioned Christmas tree lighting at 5 p.m. Nov. 28.

The ceremony will be in the field next to Farmington Public Library on Cimarron Place. It is sponsored by the city of Farmington, its Economic Development Committee and Farmington Area Chamber of Commerce.

A 15-foot, artificial tree with lights will sit on an 80-inch base in the grassy field. The tree cost $ 1,700 and the chamber and city are sharing the cost of the purchase. Lights will be turned on for the Christmas season shortly after 5 p.m. Hot chocolate and cookies will be available, along with special music by Susanna Luther, a Farmington High School student, and a choir from Folsom Elementary School.

Following the music, Santa Claus will arrive by fire truck to visit with children and be available for personal photos.

Diane Bryant, city council member and chairwoman of Economic Development Committee, said the plan is to hold a tree lighting ceremony annually with the idea that it will be bigger and better each year.

“Part of what we want to do is to build community,” Bryant said. “We want to create a community spirit that attracts people to Farmington.”

The public is invited to attend and enjoy this first tree lighting ceremony.
