Police: Student Gave Pills To Classmate
PRAIRIE GROVE — A 16-yearold student at Prairie Grove High School was arrested last week after police say she gave prescription pills to several classmates, including one who later was hospitalized.
A 15-year-old boy spent 18 hours in a drug-induced coma after passing out in a classroom Dec. 4, according to a Prairie Grove police report.
A substitute teacher told police the boy came to class quieter than usual, put his head down halfway through the class and was unable to leave at the end of the period, the report said.
A school nurse told police the student was unable to say his own name.
After his release from intensive care at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, the student told police he took two 150 milligram pills of the antidepressant amitriptyline, the report said.
Police arrested the 16-yearold classmate at the school after interviewing the boy and several other students.
The report shows the classmate told police she took between 15 and 20 pills of amitriptyline and tramadol from her mother’s home because she wanted to fit in.
A Prairie Grove police spokesman said the girl was charged Dec. 7 as a juvenile with possession of a controlled substance with an enhancement that could increase penalties upon conviction because the distribution was on school grounds.
