Lady Cards ‘Get Back On Track’

EARLY MORNING WORKOUT SPARKS SWEEP

- By Mike Capshaw

FARMINGTON — Sophomore pitcher Paige Devecsery won both games to help Farmington improve to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in 5A-West play with a doubleheader sweep.

“We needed to win some conference games,” said Farmington coach Randy Osnes. “We have Vilonia coming in here next [Tuesday] and they’re one of the best teams in the state — the 5A defending state champions — so we had to get a couple of wins and get some things back on track.”

The need to “get some things back on track” resulted in the Lady Cardinals having a 7 a.m. workout the previous Saturday, which included plenty of conditioning work on the base paths.

“We had to work on some things as far as knowing when to run on the bases,” Osnes said. “You can never assume anything and we had assumed some things as we went along here this season. And we had to make sure we had that taken care of, and we had to make sure we were in great shape.”

Maddie Adams’ RBI single in the top of the sixth inning of Game 2 accounted for Morrilton’s lone run off Devecsery (9-5). She gave up just two hits while striking out four in the opener and allowed four hits while striking out eight in Game 2.

“Paige pitched two great games,” Osnes said. “I thought she got stronger as we went along and she was spinning it a little better in the second game.”

Osnes said Devecsery gaining strength was a reflection of the team’s overall conditioning.

“I think it’s a tribute to what we do in the offseason and what we do daily,” Osnes said. “I mean, we’re going to run. It isn’t just coming out here to hang out and have a good time, we’re going to run singles and doubles, and our pitchers are going to be in good shape, just like our infielders and outfielders.”

In the bottom of the sixth, Madison Parrish looped a two-run down the right field line to create the final margin in the nightcap. Parrish also drove in a run during a four- run fourth inning in the opener.

In Game 1, Camryn Journagan scored three times and drove in three runs, including an RBI double off the left-field wall during a three- run second inning. Journagan and Tkeya McDaniel each executed successful squeeze bunts to push runs across in the fifth inning of the opener.

Alyssa Reed was 3 for 3 and Carley Antwine hit a pair of doubles to pace Farmington’s offense in the late game.

Brandy Wallace added two hits and two RBIs.

Farmington 9, Gravette 1

The Lady Cardinals scored four runs in the third and five runs in the fifth inning to pull away for a nonconfer- ence victory.

Antwine had three RBIs on four hits. She hit a two-run double in the third inning and drove in a run on a single in the fifth inning when Wallace hit a two-run single.

Devecsery allowed one earned run on three hits while striking out three in seven innings.
