Many Celebrate 99th Birthday

- MARIE ROY WCN Columnist

The reserved room was packed full and extra tables were brought in at Catfish Hole, Saturday, when family members and friends gathered to help Nathan D. Mefford celebrate his 99th birthday. His four children, Clarise, Nathan D. Jr, Carol and John with many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren proudly celebrated with him. Since the next day, Sunday, Aug. 7, was his birthday, I asked him, “If you celebrate this big today, what do you have planned for your big day tomorrow?” He replied, “I guess I’ll sleep.” He still has a great sense of humor.

The Mefford family planned another celebration for a week later. August 13 is Nathan Jr. and Charlotte Mefford’s wedding anniversary and on Saturday the 13th they planned to celebrate their 50th with a reception at their church in Springdale. We wish this special couple many more happy years together.

Well, our water bill has been raised again, the seventh time in the last five years, a couple of times only a few cents, but all other times, 2 or 3 dollars. As one customer said, “Even a few cents, with hundreds of customers, amounts to dollars. This is for the first 1000 gallons used. I don’t know how the higher usage is rated.

Another school year and here is an example of what one might hear.

The 6 year old was told that when she entered second grade, she would start learning the state capitals. She said, “I already know them.” So when asked the capital of Pennsylvania, she replied, “P”. Oh, the patience of our teachers!

Happy birthday to Jerry Goolsby, Mary Anne Cantrell, Wendell Pershall, Hollis Barker, Damon Laycox, Edna Tatum, Richard Moore, Carolyn McDonald, Eloise Parker, Jay Norton, and special greeting to Lois Norvell on her big day, Aug. 20. Happy years, all! Remember recycling next Monday, Aug. 22.
