Farmington Tennis Has Good Year Competing Among 5A Classification
— Tennis competition has been tougher since Farmington moved up to the ranks of 5A schools, but looking back first-year coach Denver Holt said the season was good.
“The season went well as we had five out of the eight positions advance to the second round of the district tournament with one position, (senior Peyton Maxwell) boys singles, qualifying for the state tourna- ment,” Holt said.
Underclassmen made up the bulk of the team with 14 athletes expected to return next year.
“I had 17 on roster with eight being freshman,” Holt said, noting, “We will be graduating three seniors.”
Holt was pleased to see the majority of Farmington competitors advance past the first-round during the district tournament.
“We finished in the top 10 at every position in conference play,” Holt said.
Farmington Boys
No. 1 boys singles, Maxwell won his first-round match, 6-2, 6-2; then won again in the second-round, 6-4, 6-2. He was defeated in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-0. The No. 2 boys singles Austin Raabe lost in the first-round, 6-3, 6-0. In boys doubles, the No. 1 team Caleb Lipford/ Coleman Warren won their first-round match, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6; and lost in the secondround, 6-4, 6-1. The No. 2 boys doubles team Joshua Jowers/Noah Disheroon also won their first-round match, 6-4, 6-4; before losing in the second-round, 6-4, 1-6, 1-6.
Farmington Girls
Among the Farmington girls in singles competition, Sam Troilo won her firstround match, 6-0, 6-0; then lost in the second- round, 6-1, 6-1. Meredith Dooly won her first-round match, 7-6, 6-4; and lost in the secondround, 6- 0, 6- 0. In girls doubles action, the Farmington No. 1 team Taighton Pettigrew/Reagan White lost in the first-round, 6-1, 6-4; while Farmington’s second girls doubles team Katelyn Cunningham/Isabella Gues also lost in the first-round, 6-0, 6-3.
State Tournament Qualifier
Maxwell qualified for the 5A State tennis tournament held Oct. 17-18 at Hot Springs. The tournament was hosted by Hot Springs Lakeside High School. Maxwell’s first-round opponent Oct. 17 was Noah McClanahan, of Hot Springs. McClanahan defeated Maxwell, 6-2, 6-1.
Scholarship Athlete
Troilo signed a scholarship to attend and play tennis at Lindenwood University, located in Belleville, Ill. She will be joining former Farmington teammate, Teah Flynn. Holt noted this was his first year being tennis coach so he wasn’t sure what all was expected from him. He learned on the go and enjoyed the experience.
